What is Vertebroplasty & Kyphoplasty

When a vertebra in the spinal column fractures, it develops fragments which may rub and slide against each other or push the spinal cord causing extreme pain. These fractures are called Vertebral compression fractures and are mostly caused by thinning of bones or Osteoporosis. Vertebroplasty & Kyphoplasty are types of minimally invasive spine surgery techniques to treat such fractures. While they follow slightly different techniques; in both Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty the spine surgeon uses cement mixture to fuse the fragments, strengthen the vertebra and provide relief from back pain or spinal pain.

How is Vertebroplasty & Kyphoplasty performed

In Vertebroplasty the spine surgeon makes a very small cut over the affected area. After that with the guidance of X-rays, he inserts a thin needle through the incision positioning it within the fractured vertebra. Bone cement is prepared and then injected into the affected area. This cement instantly hardens in 10 to 20 mins binding the fragments.

In Kyphoplasty the spine surgeon inserts a balloon catheter into the affected vertebra and then inflates it with a liquid to create a cavity. This cavity is done to restore any abnormal wedging or collapse of the broken vertebra. The balloon is then deflated and removed, post which the cavity is filled with cement.
